Intent, Implementation and Impact of the PSHE Curriculum

Here at Harnham Junior School, our PSHE curriculum is embedded in all that we do. Personal, Social and Health Education is not simply about sharing how we are feeling in a weekly circle time. It is so much more than that. PSHE is another fundamental piece of the Harnham Junior School ‘puzzle’ - the bigger picture. And what is that picture? Well look at our School Values, the acronym FAITH demonstrates what we feel is essential for all children to adopt in order to achieve their potential and to be healthy, happy citizens who are ready to move forward to the next challenges and opportunities in life. The big picture is of a school where children respect and understand faith, are active, feel inspired, have tenacity and are harmonious with each other and their community. So how does this link to our PSHE curriculum? An effective PSHE curriculum is essential for children to develop the social and emotional skills required in life and it is clear that these values run through the entire PSHE curriculum.

This brings us back to the image of a puzzle! The children experience PSHE through a whole-school scheme called JIGSAW, which is comprised of the following themes:

1 - Being me in my world

2 - Celebrating difference

3 - Dreams and Goals

4 - Healthy me

5 - Relationships

6 - Changing me

These themes run alongside our school values, the British Values and our curriculum drivers of Communication, Diversity, Aspirations, Resilience and Diversity. Without one of these ‘pieces’ the puzzle and therefore the bigger picture would not be complete.

These themes are explored across the whole school during weekly timetabled PSHE sessions but also through whole-school assemblies. Throughout these themes, children are encouraged to practise mindfulness; the process of being aware of thoughts your and feelings as they arise and able to focus your mind on what you choose to focus it. By encouraging positive self- image, a secure sense of identity and self-respect, children are in the right place to grow healthy relationships with others, therefore creating the harmony aspired to in our school values. Children are encouraged to discuss thoughts and feelings openly in a safe, secure environment where children show sensitivity, understanding and respect towards others at all times. With this trusting, open and supportive environment established, the more sensitive aspects of Sex and Relationships education can be delivered effectively.

The Jigsaw scheme, meets all the requirements of the statutory guidance for Relationships and Health Education.

Impact

The impact of the PSHE curriculum is measured through explicit discussions with children, where ‘pupil voice’ is gathered but it should also be evident when observing ‘how’ children communicate in class and around the school. If the PSHE curriculum is effective, there will be an atmosphere of trust and respect throughout the whole school. Children will be happy, healthy and equipped with the emotional literacy and social skills needed for school life and beyond.
