Governing Body 2017/2018

Mrs Trina Smith

Co-opted Chair of Governors

I became a Parent Governor in 1999, when my eldest son became a pupil at the Junior School.  I was elected as Chair of Governors the following year and became a Community Governor once my youngest son left the School in 2006.I have held various positions on the Governing Body and currently Chair the Finance Committee as well as sit on Staffing and Curriculum. From the length of time that I have been a Governor, it is obvious that I very much enjoy the involvement with the day to day life of the School and find the role both interesting and challenging. My husband and I own John Jeffery, Estate Agents in Salisbury and in my spare time I enjoy gardening, playing tennis and supporting Arsenal FC.Term ends: July 2019

Mr Luke Coles

Head Teacher

I have been at Harnham Junior School since the beginning of the century, and Headteacher since April 2002. The School has changed enormously over that time and it is with a sense of collective pride that I look at the progress we have made. From being a sleeping giant – having a great deal of hidden potential – the School is now an integral part of the community; a flourishing, creative environment in which everyone genuinely matters, and cares for each other. When I was interviewed for the Headship, I said I wanted the School to be one to which I would send my own children if I were not the Head – it is, and it is my ambition to maintain that claim, and make it so for all of the children in our community.

Miss Ruth Fletcher

Staff Governor / Assistant Head

I have been a staff governor since April 2011 and, as such, attend all Full Governing Body and Curriculum meetings. I very much enjoy working with my governor colleagues who are hardworking and supportive of the School, but who also challenge and question me on school improvement and development. Also, as staff governor I create a valuable link between all staff and the Governing Body.Term ends: September 2020

Ms Helen Evans

Foundation Governor

My name is Helen Evans I moved to Salisbury on the 17th. December 1981. I’m, married with one daughter. Before I became a teacher I worked and ran libraries in Bedfordshire.  I recently retired from teaching and was asked by Reverend Scrace to be the second Foundation governor, the other is David Stone. In June I was appointed as one of the church wardens at St. George’s church. That got off to an exciting start with the incident of the tree! I’m also a volunteer in the cathedral where I’m one of hundreds of guides.  We show people around the church explaining some of the points of interest and explaining about the services.I try to give a little back to the school who started my daughter off on her academic career. I have walked pupils to church, helped with their exploration of the church buildings and tried to answer any of the many difficult and insightful questions they have.  I also attend services at school and the carol service at Christmas in St. Thomas’ Church,I’m proud of the achievements of the pupils at all ages and glad to be associated with them and the school. Term ends: July 2019

Mr David Stone

Foundation Governor

I first became a governor at Harnham Junior School in 2003, as I approached retirement, appointed by the Parish Churches of St George’s and All Saints to act as a foundation governor. I am now in my third term of office. In addition to attending the regular Full Governing Body meetings; I serve as a member of the Finance Committee, and chairs of the Curriculum and Staffing Committees. I am also Vice Chair of governors. All three of our children attended Harnham Junior School and played an important part in their lives, so I consider that any service I am able to render the School is in part repayment for its contribution to our family.Being a school governor is an important and rewarding part of my life, but I also enjoy reading, walking, gardening and ornithology. Over the past two years I have been involved in the planning of the St George’s 2015 celebration of nine hundred years of existence.Term ends: July 2019

Reverend Becky Roberts

Foundation Governor, Ex-Officio

I joined HJS as a foundation  governor in 2013.  You will often see me in school enabling children to reflect together on the Christian values of our school in acts of worship on a Monday morning; meeting with the acts of worship monitors to plan worship and other events such as fundraising for charity  or helping out at our Cosy Club on a Monday lunchtime.
I taught for many years in London East Africa and Hampshire. This desire to see all children think and learn and celebrate life in all its fulness continues to motivate me in my role to support and challenge the school in fulfilling its aims.

Ms Jeanne Ross

Local Authority Governor

I am a retired teacher. I enjoy being a governor because through my various roles I am able to support both staff and children in helping to create a safe working environment where the teaching and learning meet the holistic needs of the children.Term ends: August 2018

Mrs Jenny Furtado

Parent Governor

Mrs Furtado is the newest member of our team of Governors.

Mr Richard Pearce

Parent Governor

I joined the Harnham Junior School Governors in the Spring of 2016.  After watching a particularly heart wrenching episode of DIY SOS, the realisation dawned on me that I could be contributing more to the local community.  The next day, whilst speaking to the Chair of Governors, she mentioned that Harnham were looking for two new parent governors and the rest, as they say, is history.

I have Grace in Year 6, and Harry who will, hopefully, be joining in September in Year 3, and having worked in education on and off since leaving University in 2001, I understand the need for a strong Governing Body.  I hope to contribute to the amazing work the team has, and is, carrying out.

I currently work at a special needs school near Andover, and hope that I can bring some of the things I have learnt during my ten years as a teacher, and a tutor, to Harnham.

Term Ends: January 2020

Ms Nicola Parsons

Parent Governor

Mrs Vicki Poole

Clerk to the Governors

I am the clerk to our amazing team of Governors which, basically, means that I do my best to see to all their administration needs, take minutes at the Governing Body Meetings and try to make their roles, as voluntary Governors, as easy as possible.  You may also have seen me in the school office where I work Monday to Thursday.
